Second Chance at Happiness

Title: Second Chance at Happiness
Author: Greta Picklesimer
Publisher: Ambassador International
Release Date: April 12, 2022
Genre: Christian Historical Romance

After Catherine Reed’s husband dies in a tragic logging accident, Catherine and her four-year-old daughter, Clair, move home with Clair’s mother and brother in order to accept a new position as the teacher for the town’s one-room schoolhouse. But Catherine carries a dark secret that she hasn’t even shared with her mother. Will she ever find forgiveness?

Samuel Harris has suffered his own loss, losing his wife and unborn child over a year prior. Although he is the town’s preacher, he struggles to trust God, blaming God for allowing him to be absent when his wife died. The guilt has burdened him ever since. But when his old flame Catherine Reed comes back to town, he wonders if they can find healing together.

Catherine believes that anyone who wants to learn should be allowed to learn, but she is quick to find a town divided on that issue. As she and Samuel set out to change people’s minds in a post-Civil War era, they find themselves drawn to each other over and over again. As they join together for the same cause, could they also find a second chance at happiness?

I enjoy reading Christian Historical Fiction and books by new authors. Second Chance at Happiness by Greta Picklesimer fits into both of the categories. I was excited to read this book based on the Synopsis.

Catherine Reed moves back to her hometown with her 4yr old daughter, Clair, after the tragic death of her husband. They will live with her Mother and Brother in the house she grew up in. Catherine is applying for the Teacher position at the One Room Schoolhouse. She has an encounter with Samuel Harris as soon as she and her daughter disembark the Train as they reach town. Samuel Harris lost his wife and unborn child a year earlier and he is also a grieving widow. Samuel is the Preacher for the Town and has been in a faith struggle since his wife's death. Catherine and Samuel had a relationship in the past and seeing Catherine gives Samuel hope that they can rekindle that and help each other through their grief. Both Catherine and Samuel have secrets that they are hiding and could be a hinder to the rekindling of a relationship. Catherine discovers that the townspeople have a very different view on Education then Samuel and Catherine do. They embark on a journey to help the townspeople understand Education values and philosophy in this post-Civil War era. Samuel and Catherine find themselves falling in love again as they spend more and more time together on their mission of Education. Will Catherine and Samuel be able to reveal their secrets to one another and their family? Will there be forgiveness for these "Sinful" secrets? Will Catherine and Samuel have a Second Chance Romance?

WOW, this story was a whirlwind book with a lot going on. I enjoyed this book from the very beginning and could not stop until I was finished. The Setting of being Post-Cival War Era is a time in History that I LOVE and appreciate so that setting intrigued me! Catherine and Samuel both had healing to do and secrets to reveal, but they seemed to be able to pick up where they left off. I appreciate that the author didn't rush them into a relationship, but allowed them to go slow and learn to trust one another. Truly a great book about "Second Chance Romance". I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who likes Christian Historical Fiction! FANTASTIC BOOK!
