Historical Fiction is a favorite genre of mine. The Thomas Sisters by Kathryn Spurgeon is the latest book in this genre that I have read.

The storyline takes us back to the 1930's in Oklahoma. The book consists of 5 Novellas for the 5 Thomas Sisters. They each had their own story to tell on many different aspects. The sisters all had struggles, triumphs and joyous times. The book also showed the reality of the lives of the Sisters. The Family Drama included many very sensitive issues like Domestic Violence, Financial issues, Child Abuse and Death and more. I was brought to tears reading so many of their struggles, especially the sensitive topics. The 1930's were already filled with so much going on in the World, like the Great Depression and other historical events. The Sisters were strong and supported each other through life happenings and they also had a shared Faith. I have to say this was one of the hardest books to read, but the stories really drew me in and I kept reading. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to read this book. The author does a GREAT job at taking True Stories and making a Historical Fiction book. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction. WONDERFUL BOOK!

Grandma Ruth Doesn't Go to Funerals JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Grandma Ruth Doesn’t Go To Funerals by Sharon Mondragon hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Grandma Ruth Doesn’t Go To Funerals

Title: Grandma Ruth Doesn’t Go To Funerals
Author: Sharon Mondragon
Publisher: Kregel Publications
Release Date: February 11, 2025
Genre: Contemporary Fiction

Something is brewing in Raeburne's Ferry, Georgia--and it's not sweet tea.

In a small town where gossip flows, bedridden Mary Ruth McCready reigns supreme, doling out wisdom and meddling in everyone's business with a fervor that would make a matchmaker blush. When her best friend has her world rocked by a scandalous revelation from her dying husband, Mary Ruth kicks into high gear, commandeering the help of her favorite granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth, in tracking down the truth. Finding clues in funeral condolence cards and decades-old gossip dredged up at the Blue Moon Beauty Emporium, the two stir up trouble faster than you can say "pecan pie."

But just when things are starting to look up, a blast from the past waltzes in with an outrageous claim. But as Grandma Ruth always says when things get tough, "God is too big." With him, nothing is impossible--even bringing long-held secrets to light. Grandma Ruth and Sarah just might have to ruffle a whole mess of feathers to do it.

I really LOVE Contempory Fiction books. I also enjoy books with unusual titles. Grandma Ruth Doesn't Go to Funerals by Sharon J. Mondragon was the most recent book in this genre that I have read.

WOW, this storyline is absolutely one of the best ever! I was reeled into the storyline from the very beginning. The main characters in this book are Grandma Ruth, Sarah Elizabeth and Charlotte Harrington. Sarah is Grandma Ruth's granddaughter and Grandma Ruth's "eyes and ears". They live in a small town in Georgia and Grandma Ruth is bedridden. Sarah keeps tabs on the small town happenings and reports back to Grandma Ruth. Charlotte Harrington is Grandma Ruth's best friend and when Charlotte's dying husband reveals something that no one can comprehend, Grandma Ruth and Sarah decide they will figure this out The story then becomes fun, humorous and heartbreaking all at once. I truly LOVE that Grandma Ruth seems to be in control of everything from the comfort of her bed, she doesn't let things "hold her back." Sarah and Grandma Ruth are determined to help their friend Charlotte solve the mystery that P.B. Harrington left behind. I also LOVE how Grandma Ruth knows that God is bigger then what is happening and he can help with this also. The book has FUN, Mystery, Humorous antics and Faith. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Fun loving books!  WONDERFUL BOOK!

Christian Historical Romance books are a favorite genre of mine. Emma's Engagement by Susan G. Mathis is Book 3 in the Love at a Lighthouse series. I have been enjoying this series from the beginning and was excited when I heard this book was out!

I truly enjoyed this storyline,  especially since it begins with an Engagement. The main characters in this book are Emma Row, Michael Diepolder, and Michael's daughter Ada. Michael is a lighthouse keeper and proposes to 37yr old Librarian, Emma. Emma has dreamed about this day for a time now and is excited to marry him. Michael is a widower and his 11yr daughter Ada will be spending the Summer on the Island with her dad. Ada lives with her Grandmother as there is no School on the Island. Michael and Emma are not sure Ada will be happy for the couple and they soon will find their fears are coming true. Ada misses her mother all the time and doesn't want a stepmother. I really LOVE that Emma and Michael are determined to help Ada know that Emma isn't a replacement for her mom and they work to get her disobedience under control. The way they approach creating a family once Ada joins them on the Island is so sweet. Michael and Emma work hard to gain the trust of Ada and their faith in God is an integral part of that. The book has Faith, Family, History, LOVE! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance! FANTASTIC BOOK!

More from Susan

An interview with best-selling inspirational historical fiction author Susan G Mathis.

The third novel of your new three-book series called Love in a Lighthouse is out. Tell us about that, please.

Join the Row-family women, Libby, Julia, and Emma, as they navigate the isolation, danger, and hope for lasting love at three different Thousand Island lighthouses in the St. Lawrence River. [Note: These can be read in any order.]

What inspired you to write Emma’s Engagement?

I have visited Rock Island Lighthouse a number of times, and it’s a beautiful lighthouse. It’s along the main shipping channel and it’s a New York State Park accessible by boat, so it’s a great place to visit. When I was asked to write a lighthouse series, I just had to write about it!

Why did you write about the Diepolder’s being a stepfamily?

The Diepolder’s story is true, though I had to imagine some of the details. Not only did I grow up in a stepfamily and became a step family when I married Dale, but my late husband and I wrote, The Remarriage Adventure, a premarital book for couples getting ready for remarriage. So, I had lots of fodder to explore the challenges of step parenting.

What was your hardest scene to write?

It’s always hard to inflict pain on the characters you’ve grown to love, so having Emma in so much pain from Ada’s rejection and the adjustment to a new marriage and stepparenting was difficult. As readers journey with her, they witness the challenges and the adjustments necessary. Her trials not only reveal Emma’s character but also influences her decisions and relationships throughout the story.

Why do you write about the Thousand Islands?

I grew up just twenty minutes from the Thousand Islands—the setting for all my stories—in upstate New York. Actually, half of the 1,864 islands are in NY and the other half in Ontario, Canada. So, I spent every summer and more exploring the beautiful region. I’ve stayed on several of the islands and camped and rented cottages there. So, after I wrote my debut novel about the largest island, Wolfe Island, I was hooked. There are so many fascinating stories to tell.

Now, I take an annual Thousand Islands Book Tour to the islands where I meet with fans, friends, and family. I’ve stayed in Singer Castle, Casa Blanca, and other places that are the settings of my book. I’ve talked with the owners of the islands, local historians, and researched in the Thousand Islands archives. All my novels are based on a specific place in the Thousand Islands and are the true stories of the owners of that island. So, my plot is generally true. Then I overlay the storyline of the fictional servants to create the story. This makes my stories a bit more challenging, but I love a good challenge.

“I love introducing the Thousand Islands to readers and have heard from dozens that the area is now a favorite summer destination,” Mathis says.

Laying Up Treasures

The word “treasure” can send mixed messages. On one hand, that noun can bring forth images of pirates commandeering others’ gold and valuables. We all get a gleam in our eye from time to time and dream of great wealth.

The verb form of “treasure” means to hold something dear, such as a photograph of loved ones. This object may have no special worth, other than sentiment. What priceless object do you protect? Is it a leather baby shoe stored in a tiny box or a beaten-up, old baseball glove?

Either way, what we pursue—and hold—as our prized possession reveals much about our priorities. Is our contentment based upon acquisitions? If so, we find ourselves on a merry-go-round ride that leaves us dizzy. No matter how much we get, we still want more. This constant demand is damaging.

“Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction” (1 Timothy 6:9 NIV).

To be well off, we need to put our hope in God, who richly provides us with all that we need and more.

“The emptiness we try to fill with earthly things stems from the desire for more of God,” said author and teacher Nancy Jenkins (Bibledolls: A Panorama of 28 Biblical Women).

To live well, we are advised to complete a wealth of good deeds. We are to be generous and willing to share. “In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:19 NIV).

Today’s prayer:

Dear Lord, please help us act on opportunities to do good for others. We appreciate your many gifts and find contentment in this moment, just as things are, with You by our side. Amen.

JustRead Tours Blog Tour: Right Before Their Eyes by Carrie Walker

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Right Before Their Eyes by Carrie Walker, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Right Before Their Eyes

Title: Right Before Their Eyes
Series:
Faith Endures #2
Author:
Carrie Walker
Publisher:
Mountain Brook Ink
Release Date: February 5, 2025
Genre: Romantic Women's Fiction

Sometimes the love you need most looks different than you imagined.

Clare Martin thought nothing of agreeing to live with her dementia-ridden grandmother when her parents left on mission. Balancing that with her job as a social worker and the expectations of her career-driven boyfriend proved doable—until Grandma started a house fire.

Mason Hughes has loved Clare for years, but the time was never right to tell her and now she’s dating someone else, fixing Mason firmly in the friend zone. He’s working to be a pediatric neurologist, a dream inspired by a special boy with a terminal brain condition and must choose a medical school. Finances are so tight he’s forced to consider a program across the country, a troubling fact he’s kept secret.

Lucia Roberts, a seventeen-year-old on Clare’s caseload, loses her foster home and is placed in an unwelcoming group home. At every turn she’s met with rejection and becomes desperate for any proof she has value—enough to make choices that could affect the rest of her life.

When Grandma Dottie and Lucia's paths take a dangerous turn, Clare frantically tries to save them. As their lives knit together, will they find the love that’s right before their eyes?

Contempory Christian Romance novels are a favorite genre of mine. Right Before Their Eyes by Carrie Walker is the latest in this genre that I have read. It is Book 2 in the Faith Endures series.

I started reading this book and just could not stop reading. The story is just amazing. The 2 main characters in the book are Clare Martin  and Mason Hughes. Clare is a Social Worker and also a caregiver to her Grandmother. Clare and Mason have known each other for YEARS and Mason has had a crush on Clare for quite a long time. He has never been able to express his feelings for her, and now she is in a relationship. Clare is really struggling to care for her grandmother and do her work as a Social Worker. Her current client, Lucia, is 17 years old and has been shifted around from Foster Home to Foster Home. Her relationship is starting to fall apart with her boyfriend. Mason is also in the middle of making some major life changing decisions. I really LOVED seeing Clare stepping up to help others, especially her Grandmother and Lucia. Mason has a strong faith and truly a heart for helping others. The author really does a great job at clearly taking so many happenings in one book woven together through many twists and turns. The storyline is one of Faith, LOVE and Friendships. I am really enjoying this series and I am already looking forward to another book in this series. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Contempory Christian Romance. FANTASTIC BOOK!
