Wrapping Paper and Fancy Bows Not Required by Jodi Murphy

For more than a decade I worked in the luxury design field, and every year around Christmas time there were holiday show houses and charity events where the designers would hold nothing back to create the most beautiful displays for the Christmas season—trees with baubles and sparkles, swags of fresh greenery festooned with handmade bows, every room dressed to the nines, dining and breakfast tables set for imaginary entertaining, and hundreds of perfectly wrapped packages that would make Santa’s elves go green with envy.

The sights, sounds and smells were magical! And though I enjoyed the "eye candy" and appreciated all of the creativity, I often left these events on a "sugar high" of the season’s pufferies and feeling disconnected to the spiritual significance of Christmas.

As we begin to count down the days toward December 25th, I will do my share of simplified decorating as a way to mark such an important day, and I will be celebrating Christ’s birth with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the gifts God has given to me . . .

My Parents
I was blessed with parents who loved and respected me. I was always important, seen and heard. They gave me the confidence and strength to go out into the world because I knew they were standing right behind me in case I stumbled. They modeled generosity, loyalty and commitment.

My Sister
Tenacious, strong-willed, and determined balanced by a friendly, supportive, “I’m there for you” spirit—that’s my amazing younger sister. She’ll step out on the front line to stand up and defend you or throw on some work clothes and volunteer to help with whatever dirty work needs to be done. No questions asked . . . you need her, she’s there.

My Husband
My husband is so comfortable in his own skin. He doesn’t compare himself to others or secretly long for what they have. He doesn’t get embroiled in other’s gossip or petty arguments. His loving influence has made me happier and more at peace. Every day I wake up to the joyful realization that I am his friend, wife, and life partner.

My Son
My firstborn. My son with Aspergers Syndrome. Raising him is the most extraordinary journey. He has made me more accepting, patient, and understanding. He has helped me find my passion to support and advocate for him and those just like him. He doesn’t filter or concern himself with being anything but who he is. I admire his strength to put himself out into a world he doesn’t fully understand.

My Daughter
She was born with grace and an "old" soul. From a very young age, she had an understanding and compassion for others well beyond her years. And when she was excluded for not following the crowd, she never compromised her values in order to fit in. She personifies all that is good and right in our world.

So I’m taking a pause from the hustle and bustle of the designers’ holiday season. This Christmas, and every Christmas henceforth, you’ll find me singing praises of “Gloria!” to God for the walking, breathing beautiful gifts of my family.

LitFuse Blog Tour: Eventide by Shelley Shepard Gray (Book 3 Days of Redemption Series)

About the Book:

A young Amish woman harbors a difficult secret. Does she dare share the truth with the man she hopes to marry?

Elsie Keim doesn't want to be left behind. Her twin sister, Viola, and her older brother, Roman, have both found love and are building lives of their own. But Elsie? She's still stuck at home, being treated like a child. No one seems to consider her a capable woman-all they see are the thick lenses of her glasses, constant reminders that Elsie suffers from keratoconus and is slowly going blind.

Elsie knows there's much more to her than her disease. That's why when a new neighbor, Landon Troyer, shows some interest in her, she doesn't want anything to scare him away . . . even if it means keeping her condition a secret.

Landon is ready to start a new life and feels like Elsie may just be the right woman to start it with. But when Roman steps in and shares the truth about Elsie's illness, Landon is floored. His job is demanding and takes him away from home, sometimes for days at a time. How could he keep up with his responsibilities and take care of Elsie?

About the Author:

Shelley Shepard Gray is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the "Sisters of the Heart", "Seasons of Sugarcreek", "Secrets of Crittenden County", and Families of Honor series. She lives in southern Ohio, where she writes full-time, bakes too much, and can often be found walking her dachshunds on her town's bike trail.

My Thoughts and Review:

I really enjoy reading books that are part of a series. eventide is Book 3 in The Days of Redemption series by Shelley Shepard Gray. I had the pleasure of reading the first 2 books in the series and had been eagerly awaiting the 3rd book! I cracked open the book and began reading the minute it arrived in the mail.

Amish Fiction is by far my favorite Genre of books, but this book proved to be one of my Favorite of Amish Fiction. Elsie, the main character, has a eye disease which is causing her to slowly go blind. I appreciate the fact that eventide is about "real life" issues, more so then other Amish books I have read. Elsie is afraid to tell her "new admirer", Landon, about her impending blindness, so her brother does. I felt that Landon handled the shocking news with grace and diginity. I know most men would "run for the hills", but Landon stood by and didn't run.

Shelley Shepard Gray does a WONDERFUL job at keeping the reader intrigued and reading on. Eventide is a book that demonstrates that how hurdles in life can be overcome with Forgiveness, Faith and Family. I can honestly say that Eventide was my favorite in the Days of Redemption Series. I picked it up and couldn't put it down until I finished it about 5hrs later!

I give Eventide 5 out of 5 stars! EXCELLENT Read!

LitFuse Blog Tour: Whispers on the Dock by Evangeline Kelly (Postcards from Misty Harbor Inn Book 3)

About the Book:

Three sisters. A charming inn. Hints of mystery and romance. And a gorgeous seaside setting. Escape to Misty Harbor Inn.

As Nantucket reaches the pinnacle of its summer glory, and the Marris sisters welcome guests at Misty Harbor Inn, youngest sister Sam Carter enters her mother's cobbler recipe in the Summerfest baking contest. But she faces a formidable opponent, a past winner who is determined to keep her title even if it means stooping to dirty tactics. Can Sam's newfound faith help her rise above the fray and reach out to this lonely woman? Meanwhile, an elderly guest arrives who knows the inn's history, and the sisters are stunned to learn that their late mother lived there as a child. But she told them she'd never been to Nantucket until her honeymoon! Through the woman's reminiscences and photos, the sisters make an intriguing discovery --- not only about the mysterious Hannah Montague, the young woman who disappeared from the house in 1880, but also about their own family history.

Readers will delight in the inviting Nantucket setting and be enthralled by the adventures of these sisters who reunite to bring their mother's Misty Harbor dreams to life.

About the Authors:

Evangeline Kelley is the pen name for the writing team of Patti Berg, Pam Hanson & Barbara Andrews, and Camy Tang, the four authors who collaborated to create Postcards from Misty Harbor Inn. Each of them has published novels individually, but this is their first series together.

My Thoughts and Review:

Whispers on the Dock is the 3rd book in the Postcards from Misty Harbor Inn series. I have read the first 2 books in the series, so I was excited about this book also.

Whispers on the Dock takes up back to Nantucket and Misty Harbor Inn. Youngest sister, Sam, is entering into the Summer Baking Contest. Sam has to "rise above" to the competition, as the competition uses " bad tactics" to try to win. A visitor to the Inn reveals some shocking news to the sisters about their family history.

I LOVED Whispers on the Dock. Small Town settings really are intriguing to me because of them being a friendly place. I felt that in this book, even with the "fierce competition" during the baking contest. The bond that the sisters share is another bright spot in the book. Whispers on the Dock is about Faith, Trust, Friendship, Kindness, and Family. I was able to finish the book in less then 24hrs, it was just that good!

I give Whispers on the Dock 5 out of 5 stars!

LitFuse Blog Tour: The Letters by Suzanne Woods Fisher (Book 1 in The Inn at Eagle Hill series)

About the Book:

The Letters:
Book one in Suzanne's brand new series; The Inn at Eagle Hill.

Rose Schrock is a plain woman with a simple plan. Determined to find a way to support her family and pay off her late husband's debts, she sets to work to convert the basement of her Amish farmhouse into an inn. While her family, especially her cranky mother-in-law, is unhappy with Rose's big idea, her friend and neighbor, Galen King, supports the decision and he helps with the conversion. As Rose finalizes preparations for visitors, she prays. She asks God to bless each guest who stays at the Inn at Eagle Hill. As the first guest arrives and settles in, Rose is surprised to discover that her entire family is the one who receives the blessings, in the most unexpected ways. And she's even more surprised when that guest decides to play matchmaker for Galen King.

With her signature plot twists combined with gentle Amish romance, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher invites readers back to Stoney Ridge for fresh stories of simple pleasures despite the complexity of life. My Thoughts and Review:

I have been a fan of Suzanne Woods Fisher books for a while and therefore excited for this new series. The series is based on a True Story, and I LOVE True story based fiction.(kind of an oxymoron but that is OK)

The main character, Rose Schrock, takes an unfortunate situation(death of her husband) and forges ahead to make a life for herself and 5 children. Rose receives disapproval from her Mother In-Law and her church, as she begins the Inn at Eagle Hill. The Inn is a B&B she started in her basement as a means of income for her family. The one thing that surprises Rose is the friendship and love that is found from her neighbor, Galen King.

I really enjoyed this book with its many twists and turns. I really love how even though Rose opened the Inn as a means of income, she is GREATLY blessed by those that stay at the Inn. The guests open their hearts and minds to Rose and she is able to minister to them. The book is about moving forward, new friendships, new love, faith in yourself and faith in God. I felt connected to Rose and her endeavors, feeling like I was a guest at the Inn. The Letters is a "cuddle up with a favorite drink and dive in" type of book. I am looking forward to the next books in the series!

I give The Letters 5 out of 5 stars. An EXCELLENT Read!

My Gift to the King by Sheryl Giesbrecht

It was a week before Christmas; a woman in the rush of her last-minute shopping bought a box of fifty identical greeting cards. Without bothering to read what the card said, she quickly signed and addressed all but one of them. A few days after they had been mailed she came across the one card that hadn’t been sent. She was horrified to read, “This card is just to say, a little gift is on the way!”

Gift-giving is just one of our many Christmas traditions. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only son, Jesus, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Truly Jesus is the best gift we would ever want to receive.

One year a friend gave me a Christmas devotional book that turned my holiday traditions upside down. Anne Graham Lotz shared her custom of asking King Jesus what gift he would like for his birthday. God wants us to give freely out of our love for him as an act of worship. This process of intentionally and sacrificially giving a "love gift to my King" is something I have added to my personal Christmas traditions. I wonder, have you ever thought about giving Jesus a gift? Maybe this year you might ask Him what He would like you to give Him.

Each year, as the Christmas holidays approach, I ask the King what he would like for his birthday. I remember Anne Graham Lotz’s criteria: “Something I would not do except the King requested it. And it is something I could not do except the King enabled me,” (Christmas Memories by Terri Meeusen pg. 159).

One year the King began asking me for His gift in September when a local high school contacted me to develop a truant program. I didn’t feel qualified. Lotz’ words rang in my mind: “Something I would not do except the king requested it. And it is something I could not do except the king enabled me.” “God, not me," I argued. I remembered what God brought me out of; I was a rebellious and promiscuous teenager, chain-smoker, alcoholic, drug addict, and drug dealer who cut class all but five days my junior year of high school. At age seventeen, I went to work at a Christian camp and there I was shown the love of God through the experience of working transformed believers. I was shown God’s love could cover a multitude of sins. Now He asked me to share this same love with those who are looking for love in all the wrong places. I committed to doing the King’s bidding.

What gift will you give your King this year? Maybe God is asking you to serve in your child’s classroom at school or teach a Sunday school class. Or maybe God is calling you to prayer or to spend more time with Him? Maybe Your King is asking you to give Him control over a situation?

"Something I would not do except the King requested it. And it is something I could not do except the King enabled me." Ask the King for His gift suggestion. When He impresses on your heart the gift He desires, offer it to Him as your gift of thanks for His indescribable gift, His Son, Jesus.

“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.” (I Cor 9:15)

LitFuse Blog Tour: On Distant Shores by Sarah Sundin

About the Book:

Caught between the war raging around them and the battles within, two souls long for peace---and a love that remains true.

Lt. Georgiana Taylor has everything she could want. A boyfriend back home, a loving family, and a challenging job as a flight nurse. But in July 1943, Georgie's cozy life gets more complicated when she meets pharmacist Sgt. John Hutchinson.

Hutch resents the lack of respect he gets as a noncommissioned serviceman and hates how the war keeps him from his fiancée. While Georgie and Hutch share a love of the starry night skies over Sicily, their lives back home are falling apart. Can they weather the hurt and betrayal? Or will the pressures of war destroy the fragile connection they've made?

With her signature attention to detail and her talent for bringing characters together, Sarah Sundin weaves an exciting tale of emotion, action, and romance that will leave you wanting more.

About the Author:

Sarah Sundin is the author of "With Every Letter" and the Wings of Glory series. In 2011, A "Memory Between Us" was a finalist in the Inspirational Reader's Choice Awards, and Sarah received the Writer of the Year Award at the Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference. A graduate of UC San Francisco School of Pharmacy, she works on call as a hospital pharmacist. During WWII, her grandfather served as a pharmacist's mate (medic) in the Navy and her great-uncle flew with the US Eighth Air Force in England. Sarah lives in California with her husband and three children.

My Thoughts and Review:

I am not a "History Buff" and stories about wars and such "go over my head". I was, however, quite intrigued by the setting of World War II in this book. I thought it was going to more "history related" so I was just surprised when I got a History lesson intertwined with the Romance in the book.

The Tension of the Romance between the main characters, Georgie(Georgiana) and Hutch, matches the tension of the War raging around them. Geogiana has a boyfriend back home and Hutch has a fiance, yet the 2 are attracted to each other. The 2 both discover that their current relationships are falling apart and they lean on each other for support. Their relationship struggles as the Pressure to do their duties in World War II mount. God brings them through the trials and their LOVE survives!

I LOVED this book! It was a "Can't put it down" book! Sarah Sundin is a FANTASTIC writer and that helps keep the reader interested in the book. The Historical setting really comes to life through Sarah's writing style. On Distant Shores is a story of Betrayal, Strength, Friendship, History, Faith, and Hope. My first impression of the book was "Ohh this is going to take forever to read". I was very impressed that even with the Historical setting, it was a gentle read. GREAT book!

I give On Distant Shores 5 out of 5 stars. EXCELLENT Read!

LitFuse Blog Tour: Winter in Full Bloom by Anita Higman

About the Book:

Lily Winter's wings are folded so tightly around her daughter that when empty nest arrives, she feels she can no longer fly. But Lily's lonely, widowed life changes in a heartbeat when she goes to visit a woman who is almost a stranger to her---a woman who also happens to be her mother. During their fiery reunion, her mother reveals a dark family secret that she'd been hiding for decades---Lily has an identical twin sister who was put up for adoption when they were just babies.

Without looking back, Lily---with her fear of flying---boards a jumbo jet and embarks on a quest to find her sister which leads half way around the world to Melbourne, Australia. Befriended by imprudent Ausie, he might prove to be the key to finding her sister. But her journey becomes a circle that leads her back home to attempt a family reunion and to find the one dream she no longer imagined possible-the chance to fall in love again.

About the Author:

Best-selling and award-winning author, Anita Higman, has over thirty books published (several coauthored) for adults and children. She's been a Barnes & Noble "Author of the Month" for Houston and has a BA degree, combining speech communication, psychology, and art. Anita loves good movies, exotic teas, and brunch with her friends.

My Thoughts and Review:

I got "pulled into" this book from the very beginning. The similarities of Lily to myself make the book all worthwhile to read: the turbulent relationship that Lily has with her mom is very similar to one that I know, I am also an identical twin, Australia is the one place that I dream of visiting. Lily's visit to her mom, after 10yrs of not speaking to or seeing each other, brings the bombshell news that Lily has an identical twin sister in Australia. Lily is determined to find her Twin Sister so she embarks on a journey to Australia. The journey to Australia does reunite Lily with her twin, but also has some unexpected twists. The unexpected chance at LOVE and the chance to reconcile with her mother.

I really enjoyed Winter in Full Bloom. I am a first time reader of Anita Higman, so I was unsure what to expect from this book. I feel that Anita Higman has a wonderful writing style that engages the reader. Winter in Full Bloom is a book about Reconciliation, finding ones place in the world, Family, LOVE and hope. I do feel that the last few chapters "lost me" as the plot sped up too quickly and the writing style changed a bit. All in all, I did enjoy the book and look forward to reading more books by Anita Higman.

I give Winter in Full Bloom 4.5 out of 5 Stars. A GOOD Read!
