I have been enjoying this series, The Ever After Mysteries, so I was excited to read Book 7 in the series. Silencing the Siren by Denise L Barela is the debut novel for this author. The series is written by various authors and each book is a retelling of a Classic Fairytale, but told in as Murder Mystery novel. The Silencing the Siren is a retelling of Mermaid.

The story is set in the 1920's. Andrew Grayson is the son of a Wealthy Parents. He thought he needed nothing more, until he meets Annabel Thompson. Annabel is Freak show mermaid extraordinaire, in a wheelchair! She is Beautiful, but he knows she would never be expected by his family. Annabel's legs are joined together, like a Mermaid. Andrew is correct, Annabel is shunned by his parents. They try to convince him to "get rid of her" and "marry someone in their circle of Society Friends". Andrew is devastated to learn that Annabel has died. He is suspicious of why and how she died so suddenly. Will Andrew discover how Annabel died? Who does he suspect for Annabel's death? 

WOW, what a GREAT Mystery Book. The story flows nicely and made for an easy and wonderful read! I really LOVE how Andrew wasn't going to let his family deter him from having a relationship with Annabel. He felt that despite Annabel's disability and her "job" in the Freakshow, she was perfect in his eyes. I LOVE his determination in wanting to know the truth about her death.  Denise L. Barela has a GREAT writing style and this book was a page turner from beginning to end! GREAT BOOK!

I’m so excited to share Silencing the Siren with you! This book was so much fun to write and research. I learned so many fun facts about old cars, old New York, and even doorbells!

Yes, you read that correctly. Doorbells.

These noisy items were such a novelty in the 1920s that they were often given as Christmas gifts!

Crazy, right?

I wanted both Andrew and Annabel to represent that feeling we have all experienced at least once in our lives. That feeling of not belonging. It looks different for each person, but it’s a uniting feeling.

Annabel will never be accepted by those outside her family, but they more than make up for that. Andrew is popular and well-off in society, but as he comes to know the Lord, he starts to feel that rift with his superficial friends and family. It’s with other believers, Annabel’s family, that he finds that deep relationship he desires. They are more than willing to provide.

This is the beauty of the body of Christ. When we are sick or in need, the body of Christ comes together to support you in that time of need and extend Christ’s love to all corners of the globe.
