Shola had called five times that evening and still, Tobi wasn’t ready to talk to him. It was only a matter of time before he came looking for her.  

Tobi popped some pop-corn into her mouth, a novel in another hand.

“Your ringtone is beginning to irritate me. It’s either you turn the phone off or put it on silent.” Detan complained, his eyes refocusing on the basketball game.

“Sorry,” she muttered.

“Who’s calling you sef?”

“Shola.”

He looked at her again. Eyes narrowed. Disbelief on his face. “Pick his call nau. Abi wetin happen? You guys are fighting again?”

“Somehow.”

Detan muted the game and faced her. “What happened?”

“It’s not that serious for you to mute your game.” She picked her phone and decided to send her husband a text. “We will be fine.”

“Talk jere.”

“I’m serious. Married couples have misunderstandings all the time.”

Detan raised his hairy brows. “Okay.” He turned and resumed watching the game. The sounds of the commentators filling the room once more.

“Did you tell him you are here?”

“Yes.” A lie.
