I am always very excited when Liz Tolsma releases a new book. I have been a fan of her books for several years and have read many of her books. A Picture of Hope by Liz Tolsma is her newest book and I had the privilege to read it recently. It is the first book of Heroines of WWII series.

The Time period is World War II  in London and France. Nellie Wilkerson is a Photo Journalist who really wants to be at the frontlines photographing, but the President isn't allowing Female Journalists to do so. She just might get her chance by going to France. Once in France she enlists the help of Jean-Paul Breslau, a French underground, to get her to the Frontlines. As the pair is traveling to the Frontlines, they happen upon an orphanage and the children all have disabilities. Nellie and Jean-Paul are now determined to save the children before the German's  get to them, as the German didn't like children with Disabilities and would have killed the children. Will Nellie and Jean-Paul rescue the chidden? Will Nellie get some Pictures to send back to her employer, a major Chicago Newspaper? 

I was absolutely enthralled with this book from the very first page turn. I was reeled in by the story. Nellie Wilkerson is a very prestigious Photo Journalist and just wants to be able to take pictures of the War. Her plans change when she arrives in France and realizes that the kids at the Orphanage need help. My heart truly melted when they found a little girl named Claire who had Down Syndrome and rescued her and took her to safety from the German's. I LOVE how Nellie put others before herself. Nellie  becomes a Heroine of the War. Nellie put herself in danger and at risk, because she cared for the Children so much, especially Claire.  I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who likes Historical Fiction, especially WWII times. WONDERFUL Storyline and BOOK!

Why Another WWII Novel Set in France

You may well read the back cover of my latest release, A Picture of Hope, and wonder why on earth we need another WWII novel set in France. After all, Kristy Cambron just had one. Melanie Dobson and Sarah Sundin will be coming out with theirs in 2022. So why did I feel the need to write my novel with the same setting?

 

First of all, I’m a Francophile. I love all things French. It started when I took French in high school. Everyone else was learning Spanish, but I wasn’t into being part of the crowd. There were only a few of us in the class, and it was great fun. We had a wonderful teacher. Being able to pull out some of that French, refine it a bit, and use it in the book was a blast. But I also love French food (who doesn’t?) and everything else.

 

Secondly, I hadn’t written about France before. When I wrote this proposal at least five or six years ago, I didn’t know France would be so hot. God did, and the book came about in His perfect timing. I’d explored the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and the Philippines. Such a shame that I was leaving out France, so I set about to write a novel located in that country.

 

Thirdly, there was so much good material to pull from. The French resistance, while small, did good work and sacrificed a great deal to get Jews out of the country and into Switzerland or Spain. The books that Kristy, Melanie, Sarah, and I write are all so different. Only the setting is the same. And when I found out that the famous mime Marcel Marceau was part of the resistance, I couldn’t help but giving him a cameo. Be on the lookout!

 

Along the way, I discovered some truly heartrending incidents that took place in France. They also compelled me to write this book. I long for the world to remember what happened so that we will never forget. And so that the atrocities committed there will never be repeated.

 

Fourthly, this was originally the third book in a series. Don’t worry – it’s a stand-alone. Maybe someday I’ll get to publish the other two. The women in the series are all American journalists in Europe. One is a reporter, the other is a broadcaster, and so I decided to make Nellie, the heroine in A Picture of Hope, a photojournalist. And where better to take pictures than on Omaha Beach soon after D-day. How she gets there is based on a very interesting true story, so be sure to read to the end for that one.

 

There are so many stories about WWII to be told and so many countries that participated in the conflict in one way or the other. The ground is so rich that we aren’t plowing the same parcel. You’ll find all of these books to be very different from each other, each with its own message, its own voice, and its own plot.

 

The focus in my book is on children with Down syndrome. I have a background in special education, and my husband and I adopted a child from the Philippines with an intellectual disability, so I’ve always had a heart for people with special needs. My daughter brings us so much joy that I wanted to share a glimpse into what these remarkable people are truly capable of.

 

So that is why I wrote a WWII novel set in France. Make yourself a cup of café au lait, butter up a croissant, and enjoy A Picture of Hope!

Sweet Summer by Christina Sinisi  is Book 2 in the Summer Creek series. I have not read Book 1 in this series, but the synopsis of this book really drew me in. 

Shelby Marano life has been in an upheaval since her Dad was murdered. She is the youngest of 3 sisters and she was always "Daddy's Girl". She has no one to turn to for advice, especially when dealing with men. Shelby has been hurt by so many men in the past that she finds it hard to trust men. She suddenly finds herself falling for Tyler Burgess. She really feels good trusting him when he offers her a place to take refuge from a major storm and protects her. Shelby's trust may come breaking down when she is faced with a stalker and Family Health Issues. Will Shelby continue to Trust Tyler? Will there be a LOVE Connection between Shelby and Tyler? Ohhh, the adventures that could happen! 

I really enjoyed this book from the very first chapter. The Author does a GREAT job of connecting the characters to one another. The book is not predictable and has many surprises throughout the book. Shelby and Tyler seem like an unlikely couple, but I really LOVE how they led to Trust not only one another, but allow God to lead the situations that occur that bring them together. The LOVE that Shelby's sister give her also allow her to let down her guard and trust others. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Christian Romance books. GREAT BOOK!!

In Sweet Summer, Tyler and Shelby play tourist in their hometown city (or at least, the city next to their small hometown of Summer Cree), Charleston, South Carolina. While Charleston has been labeled as one of the top tourist destinations in the world, the city and its surroundings hang on to some of the South’s special charm.

I am not a native Charlestonian, but am native to the South. I grew up in the mountains of Virginia where my family traces its roots back into the 1700s and a family farm. While there are many similarities between Fincastle, Virginia and Summer Creek, South Carolina (a mixture of real life towns Summerville and Goose Creek), there are also differences.

My husband and I moved here in pursuit of a job when my son turned one and he’s about to turn 28 so we have become very attached to the city. Since then, we’ve loved trying all the restaurants we can afford (or if our jobs are paying, can’t afford) in Charleston. The food is fantastic. The beaches are beautiful and the history is awe-inspiring.

One dish that we didn’t have in the mountains where I grew up is shrimp and grits. Makes sense, given that we only visited the beach one time during my childhood. There were creeks and lakes with their catfish and trout, but no shrimp.

You can buy shrimp at the farmer’s market and on the side of the road here in Charleston. I love the former and don’t trust the latter. Still, I pursue shrimp and grits around the LowCountry and up to Pawley’s Island. I don’t think I can share the real restaurant’s name here, but my favorites come from a restaurant on Pawley’s (just south of Myrtle Beach) and one on the Isle of Palms (next to Sullivan’s Island where Fort Moultrie is located next to Charleston). For legal reasons, I had to change the name in my book, but there’s only one little restaurant on a side road of the Isle of Palms with six different ways of preparing shrimp and grits.

My recipe comes from a completely different source…adapted from various recipes, including one of those Junior League cookbooks that raise money for charity. I love those books because of the homey, personal feel—and hope you enjoy the dish! *And the book!

Shrimp and Grits:

Grits:

2 cups heavy cream

¼ lb. butter (1 stick)

2 cups water

1 cup grits

Salt and white pepper to taste

Heat cream and water to boil. Add butter, salt, and pepper. Slowly add grits and reduce heat. Cook 20 minutes, stirring every once in a while.  OPTION:  Add sharp cheddar cheese or crumbled bleu cheese and stir in to melt after the grits are cooked.

Note:  If grits aren’t the right consistency after twenty minutes, continue to cook. I have tried this with varying amounts of liquid. The key is to be patient and stir to prevent lumps.

Shrimp:

Take your choice:  Blackened or Gumbo style.

Blackened:

2 lb. shrimp

Blackening seasoning

Butter

Canned or fresh shoepeg corn

Sliced onion

Saute shrimp and onion in butter. As you stir, sprinkle with desired amount of seasoning, depending on how much heat you prefer. Stir in corn at end to just heat. Spoon on top of grits.

 

OR Gumbo style:

Let’s be real. You can’t beat Zatarain’s gumbo mix.

2 lb. shrimp

Rope of Andouille sausage

Red bell pepper, diced

Onion, diced or sliced

Saute all ingredients to cook. Follow gumbo mix directions for sauce. Serve on top of grits.

By the way, no one said any of this was healthy! Live a little!

That’s part of the point of Sweet Summer. Even during life’s hardships, we need to find the little joys. God bless!

Caryl McAdoo is one of my favorite authors. Texas Timbers by Caryl McAdoo is Book 7 Cross Timbers Romance Family Saga. I have read several in this series, but I have not read them all. 

The setting is 1870 in Texas. Autumn Hope has been having a recurring dream. Her dream is very specific about her future husband. She sees a man who is Cutting Timber and her dream is so vivid she knows exactly where he is. Her father and Autumn travel 150 miles to the Sulphur Bottoms, where he is. Sean is surprised when Autumn arrives and not quite sure to think about the situation. He does know Autumn is a beautiful woman, but having been hurt by LOVE in the past, he is cautious about Autumn. He is really puzzled as to how she found him and that she knew so much about him. Will there be a LOVE Connection between Sean and Autumn? Does Sean finally let his guard down about finding love again? 

Caryl McAdoo does it again, another GREAT book!  Autumn Hope is one determined woman and she is also has a strong Faith. She felt her dreams were messages from God. I really liked how her Dad supported her and traveled with her. Sean is also a Man of Faith, although it took some time for him to believe this was God's will. I was reeled into the book from the very first pages and I did not put it down until I finished reading it. I truly thought the storyline was going to be predictable, but it was definitely a page turner book. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction. FABULOUS Book!

The Weather Girls: Stormy " by Jennifer Lynn Cary is Book 2 in this new series. I had the honor to read Book 1 recently and I was super excited to read Book 2. 

We are back in the 1970's and this book focuses on the 2nd Sister, Stormy and her husband Rob. Stormy has quite the temper and it has caused issues with her marriage in the past, but currently it is really causing strife and separation. Rob has been known to set his wife's temper off by not choosing his words carefully before he speaks. Stormy is needing her space before her temper really explodes and she and Rob separate for a time. Rob really loves Stormy and wants their marriage to work out. Will Stormy and Rob be able to reconcile and see the best in one another? Will they seek help in keeping their marriage together? 

WOW, I am truly LOVING this series. I, like Stormy, have a temper, so I totally relate to this book. I really like how Stormy realizes that she really needs some space and seeks out the separation. Rob is so tender hearted and wants the best for his marriage and for Stormy. Rob and Stormy rely on their faith to get them through the troubled times. The author does a GREAT job of bringing in the Christian message. The book is about Family, Faith and Forgiveness. I highly recommend this series to those who love Christian Historical Fiction and I also recommend reading the series in order of books! FANTASTIC BOOK!

What were you doing in 1970? Were you even around? It’s funny how for some that year is crystal clear in their memory and for some it’s chapter out of a history book.

I remember having lunch with a literary agent who’d been a guest speaker for a writer’s conference I attended. He mentioned that it was strange to him that now 1974 was considered historical. Worse, for me, it was the year I was graduated from high school! Talk about making one feel old.

And yet there’s so many wonderful things about setting a story in the late 60s- to early 70s.

The research is amazing—TV broadcasts, the music, fashions, events—all that is easily assessable on the internet. Plus, want some firsthand anecdotes? Plenty of people around to share their memories.

Unlike going back to Colonial, or Victorian, or Civil War eras, this was easy. Sort of. Or overwhelming with so much to choose from. Ha!

So, with Stormy, the second book in The Weather Girls trilogy, I touched on how the Women’s Movement of the day might have and an effect. There was a lot of rethinking of the male and female roles, a shifting of the paradigm. Should he open her door? Should she let him? When was it okay to think traditionally and when did you need to consider your partner might not like a traditional role? The ERA movement was a BIG deal back then.

So, even if you don’t remember it, I hope you will have fun going back to 1970 Kokomo with Stormy and me. I look forward to seeing you there. 😉
