Celebrate Lit Blog Tour and Giveaway: The Amish Candymaker by Laura V. Hilton

About the Book

Title: The Amish Candy Maker
Author: Laura V. Hilton
Genre: Amish Christian Fiction
Release date: February 5, 2019
Publisher: WhitakerHouse

Agnes Zook finds herself on her own in a small Amish community in Mackinac County after a tragedy kills her family. Most of the Amish call her “off in den Kopf” (strange) since she’s starting her own business and forging her own way in the community instead of relying on the bishop to take care of her. Since she’s viewed as non-submissive and too-forward for an Amish woman, she’s not courted by young men in the area. Isaac Mast is on the verge of leaving the Amish church. He’s become a sought-after auctioneer and has a thriving business, but he feels confined by the strict rules. When his brother is severely injured in a wild fire, Isaac receives a letter from his sister-in-law, begging him to come to Mackinac County to help out while his brother is hospitalized. Isaac agrees but is unsure how to manage their young children when he has weekend auctions he’s expected to attend. Agnes may be the answer to a prayer. Sparks fly when she and Isaac meet. But could their differences help them form a deeper connection to their faith…and each other?

My Thoughts and Review:

Amish Fiction is one of my favorite Genre's to read. I have read quite
a few of Laura V. Hinton's book. I was "starstruck" recently when our
local library had the front display shelf of all Amish Fiction books
and one of Laura's books was "front and center".

I dove right into this book, which is Book 2 in The Amish of Mackinac
Island series. Agnes Zook is trying to start life over after losing
her family in a House Fire. She is being independent and starting her
own business, and is looked upon by the Amish community as
strange. Her independent life is also leading to No suitors eyeing her.
That is until Auctioneer, Isaac Mast, comes to town. He is in town to
help care for his niece and nephew as his twin brother was injured in
the house fire. Agnes and Isaac hit it off almost immediately.

The "Romance" between Agnes and Isaac really got me holding onto the
reading until I was done. The couple had many differences, but those
differences were overcome and they formed a really strong
relationship, as well as deepened their Amish faith.

The Amish Candymaker is a book about starting over, renewed faith,
Forgiveness, Family and a LOVE Story. I really enjoyed this book
and cannot wait for the next in this series! WONDERFUL BOOK!

1 bag (12 ounces) milk chocolate chips
1 bag (10 ounces) peanut butter chips
2 cans sweetened condensed milk, divided
6 tablespoons butter, divided
20 to 30 miniature Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or six regular-size ones broken into four or five pieces each

For the chocolate layer: Line a greased 8-by-11.5-inch baking dish with parchment paper.

In a double boiler or metal bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, combine milk chocolate chips, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, and 4 tablespoons butter. Stir until melted and smooth.

Pour into prepared baking dish and allow to cool to room temperature, then move to the refrigerator while preparing next layer.

For the peanut butter layer: In a double boiler or metal bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, combine peanut butter chips, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, and 2 tablespoons butter. Stir until melted and smooth.

Pour on to the milk chocolate fudge layer and press pieces of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups into the surface. If desired, group candy pieces in a grid-like fashion for easier cutting later.

Allow to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate overnight or until set.

Remove from refrigerator, lift out of the pan by the edges of the parchment paper, and cut into squares, with roughly one miniature peanut butter cup or piece of a cup per square.

Store in the refrigerator.

My Thoughts and Review:
I really enjoy Historical Fiction and this book did not disappoint.
I feel that I am always learning something new when reading
Historical Fiction. This book taught me about the Historical
"Harvey Girls". The History of the Harvey Girls has really
intrigued me.

The main character, Katherine, loves being a School Teacher,
but also loves Henry. The LOVE Story between Henry and
Katherine takes many twists and turns and really makes
the book hard to put down. Katherine gets a job as a "Harvey
Girl", a job her mom also had. Even though Henry broke off
the relatioinship, he decides to follow her and gain her
heart back.

I feel the characters faith is challenged, but it also goes
through a stage of growing in their faith as they endure the
challenges of trying to restart their relationship. "On the
Rails" is a book of Second Chances, Seeking God for decisions
and following God. The Historical factor of the book is a
wonderful setting.

On the Rails is a Short book, that packs a lot of history in
it. A book that I truly enjoyed and look forward to reading
more books by Author Linda Shenton Matchett! GREAT BOOK!

Guest Post from Linda

My husband and I were fortunate to be able to take a trip to Arizona several years ago. Having been born and raised on the east coast, I was enamored with the distinctive beauty of the state, from the saguaro cacti of Phoenix and red rocks of Sedona to the volcanic landscape of Flagstaff and multi-colored bands of the Grand Canyon.

But what intrigued me just as much as the area’s beauty were the stories about the women who migrated to the state to work for the Fred Harvey Company. Upon our arrival at the Grand Canyon we came upon the El Tovar Hotel, one of the few remaining Harvey Houses. We were given a bit of literature explaining the history of Mr. Harvey and his restaurants, and the more I read, the more I wanted to know.

As it turns in the late 1800s, food was not available to travelers riding the railroad lines, so when the trains made extended stops, passengers would get off and eat at the restaurants located near the stations. From all reports, the dining experience was sketchy at best, with frequent stories of indigestion and food poisoning.

Enter English immigrant and restaurateur, Fred Harvey. Securing a contract with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, he began with two facilities. However, finding reliable employees proved to be difficult. A high percentage of the employees (all men) would use their paycheck to purchase liquor and then did not return to work for several days. At his wits end, Fred decided to hire women to act as his waitresses, but the concept was a tough sell. The only women in the hospitality industry worked in saloons and had scandalous reputations.

Fred set up dormitories overseen by a House Mothers and implemented a set of rules that included curfews, restrictions on dating, and dress codes. He ran advertisements in the large east coast newspapers. It was not long before candidates came knocking. The reasons they gave for wanting to be a Harvey Girl were as diverse as the girls. Some were looking for adventure, others needed to help fill the family coffers, while a number of them needed to get out of difficult situations ranging from domestic abuse to failed engagements.

Thanks to Fred and his restaurants, most of the 100,000 Harvey Girls found financial stability, confidence, happiness, and/or love. It is my hope that On The Rails commemorates these gals and their intrepid spirits.

JustRead Tours: The Sewing Sisters Society by Ruth Logan Herne Blog Blitz, Excerpt and Giveaway

sewing sisters society blog blitz

Welcome to the Blog Blitz & Giveaway for The Sewing Sisters' Society, a collection of historical novellas by Ruth Logan Herne, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sewing Sisters Cover 2 (4) Title: The Sewing Sisters' Society
Author: Ruth Logan Herne
Genre: Historical/Western Romance novellas
Release Date: January 22, 2019

Hattie McGillicuddy might not look like your typical matchmaker, but Hattie makes things happen in the little town of Second Chance, South Dakota. With the arrival of the railroad and official statehood, Hattie’s determined to bring brides west, and not just any brides. Brides who need the wide open prairie as much as the prairie- and the prairie men- need them! Three pioneer stories of unlikely love are woven around a little town full of homespun characters that take us back to another place and another time but with the same faith, hope and love we cherish today.

Macy can’t sew a lick, and she’s come to town with a sacrifice and a secret, but when Hattie’s first apprentice is attracted to the pastor of the only church in town—the man raising her illegitimate son— will the truth set her free? Or make her leave the town and her son behind? (The Pastor Takes a Wife)

Unjustly accused, Nellie comes west to escape the law. She has a way with tucks and gathers, and every Western town could use more tucks and gathers. She’s determined to improve the drab look of the prairie and manages to brighten hearts as well. But will her quick speech and firm ideas of women’s suffrage draw Levi Eichas closer or send the somber carriage maker running? (Second Chance Christmas)

Grief has robbed Ann Hazel, but when her aunt pushes her to go west and help an ailing Hattie McGillicuddy turn hems, Ann’s shamed into it. She’s managed to avoid life for awhile, but when Sol Eichas’s nanny comes down sick, Ann reluctantly agrees to help. As she winds her way around Sol’s heart and home, can the two troubled souls leave the past behind to embrace a future together? (Second Chance at Love)

Excerpt
Ann should have stayed right where she was in Pennsylvania.
Guilt, fear and sorrow made for somber seatmates as the dark train chugged west across desolate land. Beiges and browns mixed with hints of gray, and the three stretched wide in every direction, occasionally broken by claim shacks looking no bigger than the muskrat lodges in Crawford Pond.
Quick tears stung her eyes.
She couldn’t think of water. Of her home. Her old home, she corrected herself. Or her life there.
The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want…
Well, He wasn’t her shepherd. He wasn’t any such thing, He wasn’t Lord, God or any other lofty name men of the cloth spewed.
He was nothing. Nothing at all.
Ann squared her shoulders and lifted her chin in anger because anger was so much better than all those other feelings combined. Anger was manageable, most times.
The rest?
She clung to her satchel and the anger, sure of both. She’d boarded this train at Aunt Jean Ellen’s insistence. Her maiden aunt meant well, but if it wasn’t for Jean Ellen’s friend needing immediate help, Ann would have stayed tucked in the valley, waiting for the sun to rise and then fall each day, an acceptable monotony. She’d go back to that soon enough, once she got her aunt’s friend Hattie on the mend.

New Growth Press Review: REAL Change: Becoming more Like Jesus in Everyday Life by Andrew Nicholls and Helen Thorne

About the Book:

Every honest Christian knows the need for change. But how to get there? How do you move forward from struggles both big and small? And how does our faith in God impact our everyday thoughts, feelings, and actions? This six-session small group resource gives participants an opportunity to reflect on one particular area in their lives and then to learn more about how God changes us to become more like Jesus. All of us struggle to love God and those around us, but God has promised to keep working on us. And God always keeps his promises. The change that his gospel produces will make your life and your relationships truly beautiful. This self-contained resource with Leader’s Notes will encourage small group participants to understand and apply a biblical view of change to their lives and relationships.

Real Change: Becoming More Like Jesus in Everyday Life is based on the CCEF model of change from David Powlison’s course, Dynamics of Biblical Change. The easy-to-use six lesson format and included leader’s guide encourages participants toward an honest discussion of their own struggles while providing an understanding of how a relationship with Christ brings change. Topics addressed include understanding how we typically respond to trouble, how the cross of Christ brings comfort, help, and change, and how we can grow to be like Christ in the hardest circumstances.

About the Authors:

Andrew Nicholls, MA, MB, BChir, is a former doctor and pastor who is now Director of Pastoral Care at Oak Hill Theological College, London. He is married to Hilary and they have two children.

Helen Thorne, BSc(Hons), MA is the Director of Training and Mentoring at London City Mission. She is a trustee of Biblical Counselling UK and involved in pastoral care within her local church. She is an experienced speaker and author of Purity is Possible, 5 Things to Pray for your City and Walking with Domestic Abuse Sufferers.

David Powlison, MDiv, PhD, serves as CCEF's executive director, as a faculty member, and as senior editor of the Journal of Biblical Counseling. David has been counseling for over thirty years and has written numerous articles on biblical counseling and on the relationship between faith and psychology. His books include Speaking Truth in Love; Seeing with New Eyes; Power Encounters: Reclaiming Spiritual Warfare; The Biblical Counseling Movement: History and Context; Good and Angry: Redeeming Anger, Irritation, Complaining and Bitterness; Making All Things New: Restoring Joy to the Sexually Broken; and God's Grace in Your Suffering.

My Thoughts and Review:

The Christian walk can be met with Life struggles and burdens, which can cause us to fall. God is one who can strengthen and change us to bring us to a place where we are strong again.

REAL CHANGE is a short book that is meant to be done as with a Group, but most certainly can be done as a individual Bible Study. REAL Change should take 6 weeks to go through, but it most certainly can be done at an individual pace. REAL Change shows us how God is working WITH us and not AGAINST us!

Each chapter has lots of Discussion Questions, Scripture to reflect upon, Homework, Change Projects and Pray points. I have done many Bible Studies with Groups, but none as detailed, encouraging and with such a great focus on the topic. The Homework and Lessons are formatted in a way that is easy to understand, yet challenging for the goal in mind. CHANGE that will bring your relationship with Jesus to renewed faith!

I was really impressed and Challenged throughout reading this book. I am going to go back and do this as an actual Bible Study here at home. EXCELLENT book for new and mature Christians!

New Growth Press Review: Alongside by Drew hill

About the Book:

Alongside is a much-needed resource for both parents and those in youth ministry. In this transformative book, Drew Hill unpacks the challenges teenagers face and how youth leaders and parents can share the gospel with them at this crucial age. Full of practical insight and biblical knowledge, Alongside is an invitation to love teenagers well with the hope of the gospel.

Our teenage friends are full of questions and longings. They’re trying to figure out who they are, where they belong, and if they matter during this pivotal time of development—all while facing new realities of loneliness and isolation, despite their social media followers.

Teenagers want to be chased, and Alongside brings scripture to life and helps parents and those in youth ministry practically connect the life of Jesus to the lives of their adolescent children and friends.

Through Scripture and captivating personal stories from years of experience working in youth ministry, Hill pulls back the curtain and invites readers to step into the unfiltered world of teenagers.

How do we start meaningful conversations with our teenage friends? How do we build trust across the dining room table? What would it look like to prayerfully cultivate a group of leaders or parents with a shared goal of seeing Christ transform the lives of teenagers in our communities? What does Jesus have to say about caring for our middle or high school friends and how can he use us in his plan to rescue them?

Alongside offers practical application and biblical truths to highlight the complexities of relational youth ministry, address the needs real teenagers encounter in their daily lives and engage their hearts rather than just their behavior. Hill explores what it looks like to not only share the love of Jesus with our teenage friends but to share our very lives with them as well.

About the Author:

Drew Hill is married to Natalie. They have three children: Honey, Hutch, and Macy Heart. Drew graduated from the University at North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his masters of divinity from Denver Seminary in Colorado. He is a pastor in Greensboro, North Carolina, and also works with Young Life.

My Thoughts and Review:

I was very excited to read and review this book, being that I am a Mom to 3 Teenage Boys. Teenagers can be difficult to parent, as they begin to drift away and do their own thing. I believe parents still need to have a hold on our kids hearts and minds to continue to nurture them in the Word through the difficult situations of being a Teenager.

Alongside by Drew Hill was a great read and very encouraging. The author breaks the book down into 21 chapters. It can be used by Parents or Youth Ministry groups. Each Chapter can be read in about 10 minutes a day. The chapters consist of Life situations that are tied into Biblical situations. The end of each Chapter has a section of questions or exercises for Parents and then a different set for Youth Ministry. A Scripture Verse and Prayer are also part of each chapter.

My favorite Chapter was Chapter 2: SOS. It is about how teens and others are frequently sending out messages for "HELP" but the signs are missed by those around them. The questions for Parents are more of an exercise to get with our teen and have a meaningful conversation about being rescued.

Our Teenagers in America and in the Church need Parents and Adults to come Alongside them in life and help them through the difficult years of growing and moving into Adulthood. Drew Hill has written an EXCELLENT book that should be a MUST read for all parents of Teenagers. I read this for this review and plan on using it for our family!

My Thoughts and Review:
Amish Fiction is one of my favorite Genres to read. Molly Jebber is a new to me author, as this is the first book written by Molly Jebber that I have read.

I truly enjoyed reading Ellie's Redemption. It is set in 1921 and has many historical events mentioned, including President Taft. The relationship between Ellie and Joel is what makes this book a "read until you finish" book as the relationship has it challenges. I just wanted to keep reading to see how the challenges are overcome and it is just fantastic.

Ellie's Redemption is short, easy book to read, yet it also is intriguing and reels you in for the whole book. GREAT book! I am already on the hunt for more books by Molly Jebber!
