Celebrate Lit Blog Tour: A Promise of Home by Kathryn Spurgeon

Book: A Promise of Home: A WW2 Family Saga

Author: Kathryn Spurgeon

Genre: Historical Fiction

Release Date: November 21, 2022

What did WW11 look like for those who remained in the U.S? As the war heats up, hundreds of young men from Fremont’s hometown of Shawnee, Oklahoma, enlist, or get drafted. Word filters in about the wounded, the missing in action, and those who have died overseas.

Fremont Pope has not been drafted, but to do his part, he finds a job at an ammunition plant in Colorado Springs. His wife, Sibyl, hopes to teach women at a new church. They’re glad to get away from their cantankerous family, and then their family follows them to Colorado!

When the plant begins to close down, Fremont’s boss offers an amazing promotion back east. Their other choice is to move to New Mexico for mission work. Which will it be? Plunge ahead to a lucrative corporate job or help a small new church grow?

Ultimately, they yearn to go home, but where is home? Are they willing to give up their dreams and begin again?

As the couple stays in touch with people in their hometown, they learn of numerous war-time tragedies. Their return to Shawnee coincides with soldiers returning home. Based on a true story, footnotes and author’s notes are included.

Kathryn Spurgeon is a great author. I have read a couple of her books. Promise of Home is her latest novel and I had the opportunity to read it recently. It is Book 4 in The Promise series. I have read Book 2 and 3 in this series and I have been looking forward to this book!

Fremont Pope has watched so many men in his town of Shawnee, Oklahoma get Drafted or Enlist in the Service during WWII. He was never drafted so he decided to move his family to Colorado Springs and take a job at an Ammunition Plant. His wife, Sibyl, is wanting to teach a class at a New Church. They are devasted when the new Church treats them unkindly and is very unwelcoming. Fremont and Sibyl are not too excited when their family also decides to move to Colorado Springs, as their family is difficult to deal with it. Even more Devasting news when the Plant Fremont is working at shuts down. Two opportunities arise for their family and they have some decisions to make for their family. Will Fremont follow his Boss to a wonderful job back East or will the Family decide to do Missionary Work in New Mexico or even return to Shawnee, OK? Will they ever find their HOME and where God wants them to be?

I LOVED this book from beginning to end. I truly felt sad for the Family and how the New Church treated them. A Church should be a welcoming place and to be shunned for no apparent reason was disheartening.  Fremont is a man who wants the BEST for his family, but the times of 1930's and 40's were times of struggle for many. I LOVE that Fremont headed to Colorado to take a job at an Ammunition plant in times of War.  Fremont and Sibyl rely on their faith and keep praying that God will direct their path and help them find where they belong!  I HIGHLY recommend this Historical Fiction book to those who love reading about Wartime! WONDERFUL BOOK!!

Researching the 1930s and 40s was almost more fun than writing the book!
