Simple Womans Daybook 3/30

Outside my window... It is dark and cold. Chicago still has not realized it is spring yet.

I am thinking... about a book and hot cup of tea.

I am thankful for... Taste Tests. I have been participating in a few lately and it surely helps our family while DH is unemployed.

I am wearing... Leggings and a t-shirt. Almost time for bed though.

I am remembering... nothing much. My "memory" has shut down for the day. LOL

I am creating...  nothing. I don't have an creative juices right now.

I am going... to relax in my Reading Chair and Ottoman! Time for a good book!

I am reading.... lots of great library books(see right sidebar). I am right now reading
Tending Roses Lisa Wingate and it is a good book so far!(almost done and then onto Book 2 in the series)

I am hoping...
that our tax refund will be deposited this week as we could really use it for some bills. We did get word that it should be deposited this Friday the 1st.

On my mind...
 Nothing much!

From the learning rooms...
Doing our regular studies this week!

Noticing that...  March is almost over, but it doesn't feel like it.

Pondering these words...

Proverbs 16:3
Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.

I know that my plans are not always God's plan. By committing "my plans" to the Lord he will work out every detail much better then I can.

From the kitchen...  Our Menu Plan for 3/27-4/2

Around the house... We are working our Spring Cleaning.

One of my favorite things~  My Android Phone. I love that I have so many apps and especially the radio via my phone!

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Finish up Spring Cleaning. Hopefully going shopping this weekend for a few things that we need, if we get our tax refund. Saturday is our homeschool support group Family Game Night and PotLuck!

My Brush with "Road Rage"

I hear stories of Road Rage and how much damage, hurt or deadly is can be. I always feel so sad for victims of road rage. Well, I almost became a victim myself today.

Today was my weekly grocery shopping trip. I started out at Aldi's, which is across the street from my house. Joshua, almost 9, and myself went and did our shopping there and was back in the car in about 20 minutes. We begin driving southbound in the parking lot to get to the other end to get out onto Harlem Ave. A vehicle was coming 60mph out of one of the aisles. He was only an arm's length away from hitting our car, but I stopped in time. I beeped my horn at him to let him know "Slow Down". I let him come out and turn to go north and I continue south. All of a sudden he makes a U-turn and comes racing after me. I got frightened, held onto the wheel tight and instead of turning out onto Harlem, I turned to go to the back part of the parking lot. I got to back, turned and went north. He was still following me at high rates of speed. I am still holding tight, driving and by this time I am also giving out "frightened screams".  He swerved around pedestrians. My son is in the back calling 911 and trying to get the plate number. I turned down one of the aisles that was a little busy. He lost sight of me and turned down the next aisle.  He almost caught up to me at the end of the aisle, but I drove past him going west  while he was heading east. He finally gave up and zoomed out onto Harlem going SouthBound at high rate of speed.

I pulled over in the parking lot near a vehicle that had a male putting groceries in the car. By this time 911 was on the phone, so I got on the phone and told the dispatcher what had happened, but that I was able to elude him. She made sure that we were OK and made sure I didn't want a cop out there. I told her we were good and THANK YOU!!

I took a couple of minutes to compose myself and then went onto finish the shopping and running a couple of errands.

I know God was watching over and protecting us today! Road Rage is serious and I found out today how angry people can get. I am so glad God was protecting my son, myself and our vehicle from such anger and didn't allow the crazy man to catch up to us!!

Menu Plan Monday

Ever have a week where you don't plan your meals and just "wing it" daily? I did that last week and it was crazy. I have found that I need to plan our weekly menus or it just creates chaos and confusion. I usually do my planning on Saturday and shopping on Sunday. I just completed our menu plan and grocery list for this week, but at least I got it done. I will be doing grocery shopping in about an hour today! YEAH!

Here is our menu plan for this week:

Spring Cleaning Time

I am going to have a busy week ahead, as I have declared it Spring Cleaning week in our household. The weather outside doesn't feel like Spring yet, snow and cold are expected this week, so I think it is a great week to Spring Clean. Also, we don't have anything planned for this week, therefore it is really a beneficial week. Even though, one of my favorite blogs/forums is hosting a Spring Cleaning Week April 4-8, I am going to jump ahead a week and then finish up the week of the event.

We will do our school plans in the mornings and Spring Cleaning after lunch. I plan on tackling one room a day and getting it decluttered and cleaned up.I will tackle every inch and corner of each room as I clean and make sure it gets a good "deep clean".

My goal and schedule for the week:
Sunday: Kitchen and Front Room (both don't need a lot of work, so we can tackle 2 in one day)
Monday: Toy Room/School Room
Tuesday: Boys Bedroom
Wednesday: Our Bedroom
Thursday: Bathroom
Friday: Kitchen Cabinets (especially "TupperWare" and Pots and Pans cabinets)
Saturday: Hoping to be done, but if not, finish up any loose stuff

Well that is all good and will take care of the "outward appearance", the "inward appearance" is also a good place to "Spring Clean". I was searching for an image to include above and came across an awesome blog post about "Spring Cleaning the Heart, Part 1".  Spring Cleaning the Heart, Part 2, and Spring Cleaning the Heart, Part 3.  I am going to print those posts out and utilize them during my Spring Cleaning week and have a "heart cleaning" also. I am also going to dig up a great devotional that I had printed a while back and "pushed to the wayside" after using it for a few weeks. Create in Me A Clean Heart is a great Devotional for helping those who might be "Disorganized". I am actually a "organized" person, on the outward side, by nature, but having 3 young boys and a husband, it doesn't seem like it. Although, on the inside any disorganization is not anyone's fault but my own. So as I go about my apartment this coming week, I will also be "spring cleaning" my heart!

My Scripture Verse for this week:
Psalm 51:10-11 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

I will post updates each day of my progress in both areas of "spring cleaning" tasks, outward and inward. I know that with God on my side I can and will accomplish these tasks!

Coming Soon: Soul Surfer coming to Theaters April 8th

I am normally not a "movie person", but I am very excited about a movie that is coming to theaters on April 8th.

Soul Surfer is the inspiring true story of Bethany Hamilton.  Bethany was born into a family of surfers and began surfing at a young age near her home on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. October 31, 2003 was a day that changed Bethany on the outside, but allowed her to grow stronger on the inside. She was attacked by a shark while surfing and she suffered a severed Left Arm. Bethany endured the loss of 60% of her blood and many surgeries after the attack, but just one month later was back on the her board and surfing again and just 3 months later she was back to competition.

Bethany's Faith in God and her positive attitude have been amazing! When many would take a "tragedy" such as Bethany's and not press forward, Bethany wanted to reach her goal of becoming a Professional Surfer. In 2007 she achieved that dream and turned Pro! To learn more about Bethany and her amazing journey: Bethany's Bio.

See the official movie trailer:

Save the date: Friday April 8th and get your tickets early to see this awesome, fun, inspiring movie about Bethany Hamilton.

Simple Womans Daybook

Outside my window... It is cold and rainy. I think Spring doesn't realize it should be here in Chicago. LOL! We are expecting snow on Friday and it will be cold weekend.

I am thinking... about nicer and warmer weather. I really enjoy spring and summer. We love getting out to parks and doing outdoor stuff!

I am thankful for... a hubby who likes to cook dinner. I had a Taste Test today and I left him with 2 rolls of Ground Turkey. I said "figure something to do with these" I came home at 5pm and he had made up a batch of Chili. Perfect thing for a cold and rainy day!

I am wearing... Leggings and a hooded shirt. Almost time for bed though.

I am remembering... 2yrs ago today was the day I broke my right wrist. I still have some issues with that hand, but I am 95% good with it!

I am creating...  Curriculum Needs and Wants list. I will be purchasing some stuff when we get our Tax Refund.

I am going... to relax in my Reading Chair and Ottoman! Time for a good book!

I am reading.... lots of great library books(see right sidebar). I am right now reading
Tending Roses Lisa Wingate and it is a good book so far!

I am hoping...
that our tax refund will be deposited this week as we could really use it for some bills.

On my mind...
 Nothing much!

From the learning rooms...
Doing our regular studies this week!

Noticing that...  Winter doesn't want to leave. It seems like 1/3 of the country is being hit with blizzards and winter weather.

Pondering these words...

Proverbs 16:3
Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.

I know that my plans are not always God's plan. By committing "my plans" to the Lord he will work out every detail much better then I can.

From the kitchen...  Nothing much! I didn't even do a menu plan this week. Been a crazy busy week.

Around the house... Hoping to get some things organized and decluttered over the next week.

One of my favorite things~  My Library Card!! It really allows me to enjoy my favorite hobby of all time, READING, for FREE. I can also borrow DVD's, music and more! Our family visited 5 libraries over a 3 day period this weekend because it was cold and rainy and libraries are a great place to "hang out".

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Day 3 of a 3 Day taste test tomorrow. Mid-week activities at church after the Taste Test. Thursday and Friday, no where special. Saturday is AWANA games and Nathan is participating for the Sparks level!

Bath and Body Works Deal today!

I got to experience 2 of my favorite things today: Shopping at Bath and Body Works and getting an awesome deal!!

Bath and Body Works had a 4 hour sale to day from 1pm-5pm. I am lucky enough to live 5 blocks from a mall that has a B&BW store in the mall. I was also lucky to have a $10 Gift Card that I earned from online survey taking. The 4hr Fragrance Event deal was Get a FREE Tote* and Full-Size Country Chic Body Lotion w/ any full size Signature Collection Purchase! The location I went to was allowing customers to purchase any sized Signature Collection item. I purchased 3oz bottle of Carried Away body splash for $5. I also purchased a foldable reusable tote for $3 and my son picked out a Pocket Sized Anti-Bac Hand Sanitizer for $1.50. The cashier rang up the tote bag and then deducted the cost from the receipt. My total came to $10.41. I used the $10 GC and then paid .41¢ out of my pocket for everything, including the free tote and Full Size bottle New scent: Country Chic. The total value of all the merchandise is $26! Awesome deal!!

The Country Chic is totally something I would wear and intend on buying some more. My favorite scent always has been Cucumber Melon. I would always get a couple bottles in my stocking every year growing up and I still buy it!

Pics of my "goodies":

Joshua, who will be 9 next month, went with me today. He found the men's section and came out smelling very "manly". He even requested a couple of things for his birthday! I know I will make that happen for him!

I will also get a few of my favorites for summer time. We will be getting our tax refund soon and I usually treat myself to B&BW at Tax Time!

First "Park Day" of 2011

Woohoo!! We had a beautiful day here in Chicago, although a bit cloudy, the weather was warm enough for a Park Day. We love Park Days and we took full advantage of the 66° weather today!

We began our day by starting to cook about 10lbs of Corn Beef. I make a Corn Beef and Cabbage dinner every year for our family and one for my dad. Harlin did most of the work, while the boys and I did some computer stuff. Both dinners were ready by 1pm. We got everything packaged up. Covered our dinner up and put it in the microwave, so it will stay warm. We headed out to my dad's, who lives near Sox Park. The boys helped my dad with a few small chores at his apartment(took out the garbage, filled the fridge with bottled water and cans of pop, and emptied his money canister in their money jug). We left there around 2:15pm. Came back out to our area and headed to our favorite park, Proksa Park! It was starting to really get cloudy and chilly, but it was still a good day for the park.

Here are some pics from our day:

I actually ran into a friend of mine from High School while at the Park. We only got to chat for a few minutes, but it was cool! My boys were playing with her son!

We let the boys play for an hour and then we headed to the library so I can pick up a couple of books on hold. We got home around 4pm and our dinner was still piping hot!

I am very glad we took advantage of this warm weather because it might the only one for a week or 2. The forecast is calling for rain, snow and cold starting tomorrow.

Looking forward to many more Park Days this Spring and Summer!

Simple Womans Daybook

Outside my window...  Beautiful Sun Shine and warmer temps! We are going to have a high in the mid 50's today! Tomorrow will be warm and sunny with temps in the high 60's!! YEAH for Spring!

I am thinking...  about the Corn Beef and Cabbage Dinner we will be having tonight at Church dinner! LOVE Corn Beef and Cabbage!

I am thankful for...
being able to do Focus Groups and Taste Tests. It really does help the family budget!

I am wearing... PJ pants and PJ shirt! Going to get ready for the day soon!

I am remembering... how much I enjoy spring! Looking forward to spending time outside tomorrow!

I am creating...  Some new budget plans, especially for our Tax Refund.

I am going... to church for Mid-Week Activities.

I am reading.... lots of great library books(see right sidebar). Tomorrow is Library Day. I will have to be quick making my list, as it was supposed to be next Tuesday, but we now have other plans for all day Tuesday! I love reading blogs also.

I am hoping...
that our tax refund will be deposited in the next week or so.

On my mind...
Hubby's employment. He was fired from his job of 5 months last week due to a training issue. The lack of training on the employers part and they admit it.

From the learning rooms...
Doing our regular studies this week!

Noticing that...  The temps are getting warmer and I hope they stay that way!

Pondering these words...

Proverbs 16:3
Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.

I know that my plans are not always God's plan. By committing "my plans" to the Lord he will work out every detail much better then I can.

From the kitchen...  Here is our Menu Plan for 3/13-3/19

Around the house... Spring Cleaning this week and next. I am cleaning cabinets, closets and all!

One of my favorite things~

I earned a $100 GC for Sears by doing a 3 day online discussion and purchased this coffee pot and Hot water system a month ago. It has quickly become my favorite small appliance. I don't drink coffee, but I love Hot Tea and Hot Cocoa. The Hot Water Reservoir part keeps 56oz of water hot all day long. No more Tea kettle on the stove and no more having to reheat water each time I want tea!! LOVE IT!!

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Today we have Mid-Week Activities at church. Tomorrow is Library Day. Hoping to get out and about to the parks over the weekend, if the weather is nice.

Works for Me Wednesday

I really love Dollar Tree, especially in the Spring when they are stocking all their spring and summer items. We went to Dollar Tree last week and I found something that I had to buy.

We use lots of paper plates in our household for breakfast and lunch, we don't have a dishwasher in our apartment. A couple years ago I had purchased some Straw Paper Plate holders from Wal-Mart. They were OK, but they get dirty, get stuck on clothes, and tear very easily. We ended up throwing them out last summer. We have been "doubling up" on plates since then. I did not like doing this as it "doubles" the expense of paper plates because then we run out twice as fast.

I found some really nice Paper Plate Holders last week at Dollar Tree. They are made of hard, durable plastic, are washable and come in variety of colors. I purchased 3 packs, each pack has 4 holders. I bought the boys "Colors", as we color code things for the boys since they are so close in age.

Here are the pics:

We have been using these daily since Friday and we really like them! It cost me $3 for a total of 12 holders. I am going to go back very soon and get a few more packs. I will save the other packs for summer time picnics and camping. I have learned with Dollar Tree: If you see something you like, buy it in multiples as it might be gone for good the next time you go!!

These Paper Plate Holders WORK for ME!!

Banana Bread Baking Day

I love Banana Bread and so do my boys. I found an awesome deal on very ripe bananas late last week. A local grocer had single bananas 10/$1. I purchased 20 very ripe bananas just for baking and 15 bananas for eating.

I wanted to try several different recipes since I had so bananas, so I went to some of my favorite recipe sites and found some recipes. I found 4 different recipes and I added them to my  SpringPad  account, so I could access them from my smartphone.

I began yesterday afternoon around 12:30pm with mashing all 20 bananas.  The first recipe I decided to use was for 2 loaves of Banana bread. I made one the loaves plain and to the other I added in Chocolate Chips.

The second recipe we made was for Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins. Our family loves muffins, so I thought this would be something different and tasty for us! I doubled the Muffin recipe so we can get 24 muffins out of it. I really went "different" with the 3rd recipe which was Banana Pineapple Bread. Let me just say on this one:  "Don't knock it until you try it", "You will be pleasantly surprised". By now it was dinner time and I really wanted to just be done, so I used the 4th recipe BEST Banana Bread or Muffins.  This recipe  rendered us 3 full sized loaves and 6 mini loaves. It was just regular banana bread.

Pics from our baking day:

We tried "samples" from all the recipes and all of them were hits!!  The Banana Pineapple Bread I was not sure about when I read the recipe, but it had rave reviews. The reviews were spot on! It is delish!! The Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins are outstanding! Both recipes for regular banana bread are awesome also!!

I don't have a chest freezer YET, so we shared some with my dad and some with a lady from church. We are freezing a couple loaves for us and the rest are going to go to our church for their Food Ministry they have. The Food Ministry provides meals for families in need: Illness, new baby, Grieving and more. I will put them in the freezer at church and they can add them to the meals as a snack bread!

Banana Bread Baking day was a very inexpensive day considering the "haul" we had at the end. The bananas were $2 and I have all the rest of the ingredients on hand. I buy our flour in bulk at Sam's Club for $7 for 25lbs. I am sure the total cost for all the ingredients I used was not more then $15!! That is about .30¢ a piece for what we ended up with! LOVE IT!!

I had so much fun baking banana bread, that I hope to do it again very soon! We will be getting a small chest freezer when we get our tax refund and I can't wait to begin stocking our freezer with goodies!

The Best $7 I EVER spent!!!

I was a little sad earlier this evening, when I discovered something of mine has a "boo-boo".  My hamper that I have had for 20yrs and is still going strong and sturdy, has a small "crack" on the lid.

I purchased this hamper back in '91 when I was working at Venture Store(it was like a Target or Wal-Mart) It is a Rubbermaid hamper and I only paid $7 for it! It has survived many moves and has been my own hamper for 20yrs! I was folding laundry tonight and noticed a crack on the lid and was pretty shocked!

It is still usable and I hope that the lid doesn't continue to break! I will continue to use it until the main part of the hamper breaks, but that is still going strong! I have purchased other Rubbermaid hampers since this one and those are still holding up and we are still using those, but this one has lasted 20yrs and is like a "part of the family".  LOL!! LOL!!  It is not often that a "plastic" product holds up this long and I am so glad that it has! This has been the best $7 I have EVER spent!!!

Outside my window...  We are getting some "spring" showers today. Going to be rainy and gloomy.

I am thinking...  how "interesting" raising boys is. They are hyper, yet fun!!

I am thankful for...
awesome resources that I find. It sure makes things run smoothly

I am wearing... light blue PJ's pants, a PJ shirt and slipper socks.

I am remembering...  7 Kids die in PA Housefire  This just happened today. I don't know this family, but this is a huge tragedy. I pray God will comfort this family!

I am creating... I have some projects in mind, just have to get on the ball and get them accomplished.

I am going... to church for Mid-Week Activities.

I am reading.... lots of great library books(see right sidebar). I love reading blogs also. Just picked up a series of books by Lisa Wingate from the library.

I am hoping...
that our tax refund will be deposited in the next week or so.

On my mind...
budgeting our tax refund in my mind and going over needs and a few "wants".

From the learning rooms...
Doing our regular studies this week!

Pondering these words...

Around the house... Nothing much going on. We will be gone much of the day today.

One of my favorite things~  StumbleUpon   I have been using StumbleUpon for about 2 1/2 yrs and I love it!! It is a neat way to find sites according to your interests, just with a click of a button. For those not familiar with StumbleUpon check out this StumbleUpon Tutorial. Things I like about StumbleUpon: Social Networking, Bookmark Manager, discovering new and cool sites.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Today we have Mid-Week Activities at church. We are stopping at a local library on our way to church. We don't have many plans for the remainder of the week.
